About the Artwork
Created during Fuseli's mature period when he was establishing himself as London's master of the sublime and supernatural, this work exemplifies his fascination with psychological intensity and mythological subjects drawn from classical literature. As a leading figure in British Romanticism, Fuseli rejected the rational clarity of Neoclassicism in favor of emotional extremes and visionary imagery that would influence artists well into the nineteenth century. The painting depicts the Greek myth of Ixion, who was punished by Zeus for his attempted seduction of Hera; instead of the goddess, he embraced Nephele, a cloud fashioned in Hera's likeness. Fuseli's interpretation emphasizes the psychological torment of divine punishment while exploring themes of desire, deception, and the boundary between dream and reality that preoccupied Romantic artists and writers of his era.
