The Quai Sainte-Catherine, Honfleur

Le Sidaner painted this view of the Quai Sainte-Catherine during a period when he was consolidating the distinctive technique that placed him at the edge of Pointillism without fully committing to Seurat's rigorous scientific method. By the first decade of the twentieth century, he had settled into a practice of returning repeatedly to a small number of beloved sites, Gerberoy, Versailles and the Norman coast among them, building up layered impressions across seasons and times of day. Honfleur, already consecrated in French art by Boudin, Jongkind and the early Impressionists who had gathered at the Ferme Saint-Siméon, held particular resonance for a painter absorbed by the poetry of quiet water and old stone. Where those predecessors had pursued transient weather effects with rapid brushwork, Le Sidaner was more contemplative, more concerned with the soft accumulation of coloured touches into an atmosphere of stillness. His work was championed by the critic Gustave Geffroy and shown regularly at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts; he occupied a position in French art that critics of the day described as lying between Post-Impressionism and the emerging intimiste tendency associated with Vuillard and Bonnard, though Le Sidaner's subjects were consistently exterior and architectural rather than domestic.
