The Dessert

Le Sidaner painted The Dessert during a period of sustained focus on the domestic interior as a space of quiet philosophical weight. Working in the tradition his contemporaries called intimisme, he occupied territory adjacent to Vuillard and Bonnard but with a distinctly cooler, more solitary character: his tables are almost always set for a meal that has just ended or has not yet begun, and the human figure is conspicuously absent. By 1901 Le Sidaner had settled into the rhythm of spending summers at Gerberoy, the medieval walled village in Picardy that he would eventually transform through gardening into one of the most photographed rose gardens in France, and winters in Paris, where canvases like this one were exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. His work was championed by the critic Gustave Geffroy and collected widely in France and Britain, and he was regarded by many of his contemporaries as among the most important painters of interior light working in France. Post-Impressionism is the broadest accurate frame for his method, but within it he pushed toward something closer to Symbolism in mood: the empty chair, the abandoned glass, the open window all carry a quiet elegiac charge that places him alongside Fernand Khnopff in sensibility even while his palette and touch remain rooted in the Impressionist inheritance.
