The Drawing Lesson

Henri Fantin-Latour painted this work in 1879, a period in which he was consolidating his reputation as one of the most perceptive observers of bourgeois Parisian interior life. Already celebrated for his large group portraits of literary and artistic circles, including the famous Un atelier aux Batignolles and Hommage à Delacroix, he turned repeatedly in the 1870s to quieter domestic subjects: women at pianos, women reading, women engaged in the disciplined activities of educated middle-class life. The Drawing Lesson belongs squarely to this series and reflects his lifelong admiration for Courbet and the Dutch masters, whose influence is legible in his preference for interiors with a single concentrated light source and a near-monochrome tonal armature. Fantin-Latour occupied an unusual position in late 19th-century French painting: personally close to the Impressionists and a friend of Manet and Whistler, he nonetheless rejected their optical experiments in favour of a Realist discipline rooted in careful tonal observation. This painting exemplifies that position, presenting a genre scene with the gravity of a formal portrait and the structural patience of a Dutch interior.
