Spring In Town
About the Artwork
Wood painted Spring In Town in 1941 as part of a planned set of four seasonal panels commissioned by the Associated American Artists as limited-edition lithographs, though the canvas itself stands as an independent oil. By this point in his career, Wood was the defining figure of American Regionalism, the movement that turned the rural and small-town Midwest into the legitimate subject of American fine art at a moment when social realism and abstraction competed for critical attention. The work belongs to the same vision as American Gothic and Spring Turning: an insistence that ordinary American life, rendered with ironic affection and formal rigor, carried real artistic weight. Critics at the time debated whether Wood's rounded, almost cartoon-inflected forms were nostalgic or satirical; later scholarship has largely settled on both at once, reading the painting as a tender but knowing portrait of a community that, by 1941, was already beginning to change. The Sheldon Museum of Art in Lincoln, Nebraska holds the finished oil.
