American Gothic
About the Artwork
Wood painted American Gothic in 1930, the year the Great Depression tightened its grip on the American Midwest. He had recently returned from three study trips to Europe, where he absorbed the hard contours and meticulous surface of Northern Renaissance panel painting, particularly the work of the Flemish and German masters, and brought that discipline back to an explicitly American subject. The painting was completed in a matter of weeks and submitted to the Art Institute of Chicago's annual exhibition, where it won a bronze medal and was immediately acquired by the museum, where it has remained ever since. Critical reception was famously mixed: Iowans read the figures as a dignified tribute to Midwestern resilience, while urban audiences and satirists saw stiff provincialism ripe for parody. Wood himself maintained that he intended neither attack nor uncritical celebration but a straightforward formal statement about a distinctly American architecture and the kind of people he imagined inhabiting it. The work belongs to the American Regionalism movement, a 1930s reaction against European modernism and urban abstraction, championed alongside Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry, and it has since become a cultural shorthand reproduced and parodied more than almost any other American canvas.
