Healy painted Lincoln from life on multiple occasions during the Civil War years, but this particular portrait was completed in 1869, four years after Lincoln's assassination, when Healy was living and working in Rome and later Chicago. It belongs to a period when Healy was synthesizing his French academic realism training under Baron Gros's circle with the direct observational practice he had developed across decades of painting American statesmen, European royalty, and Pope Pius IX. The composition was commissioned for the White House collection, where it entered as part of the sustained effort after the Civil War to memorialize Lincoln through official portraiture. Healy drew on sketches and earlier sittings to reconstruct the likeness, giving the finished work both documentary authority and a retrospective gravity.
