Painted in 1878, Autumn Oaks belongs to the most celebrated phase of Inness's career, after his extended study in Italy and France had thoroughly dissolved any residual allegiance to the topographic precision of the Hudson River School. By the late 1870s Inness was moving decisively toward the dissolved, tonal mode that would define his final decade, yet here that drift is held in productive tension with structured form: the tree mass reads as solid architecture even as the light around it breathes. The painting entered the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, where it remains one of the most reproduced examples of Tonalism's emergence from Romanticism. Inness was influenced by the Barbizon painters, particularly Corot and Rousseau, and by the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg, which led him to regard landscape not as scenery but as a vehicle for spiritual feeling accessible through mood rather than narrative.
