To Clymene - George Barbier
About the Artwork
George Barbier was among the leading French illustrators of the 1920s, working at the height of the Art Deco movement across fashion plates, theater and ballet design, and luxury periodicals such as the Gazette du Bon Ton. His images fused a classical vocabulary, mythological titles, draped figures, gestures borrowed from antique sculpture, with the sleek, modern line and saturated palette of Deco graphic design. To Clymene reflects that pairing: a mythic name attached to a thoroughly modern silhouette. Barbier's work sat at the crossroads of fine illustration and commercial art, produced for reproduction in print rather than as a singular museum canvas, which is part of why so much of it survives today chiefly through the pochoir plates and periodicals of the era rather than through a single institutional home.
