About the Artwork
George Barbier worked in Paris in the 1920s as one of the defining illustrators of the era's fashion and theatrical world, contributing to journals such as the Gazette du Bon Ton and designing costumes and sets for the stage. His treatment of classical subjects, including this one, borrows the same graphic language he used for couture plates: flattened space, decisive outline, and a jewel-toned palette suited to gouache and pochoir printing. This places the work squarely within Art Deco, a movement that prized stylization and surface glamour over naturalistic illusion, and that drew freely on myth and antiquity as costume for modern sophistication. The Judgement of Paris, an old story of a shepherd asked to choose the fairest of three goddesses, gave Barbier an excuse to do what he did best: arrange beautiful women in a decorative tableau. Its style situates it firmly among the fashion-plate mythologies that circulated in French print culture of the period.
