About the Artwork
George Barbier was among the defining illustrators of the Art Deco era, active primarily through the 1910s and 1920s in Paris, where he worked across fashion plates, costume design, and luxury book illustration. Scheherezade draws on the same Orientalist fascination that swept through French decorative arts and theater after the Ballets Russes staged their famous production of the same name, a craze for exoticized Eastern imagery that fed directly into Barbier's elegant, stylized women. His work sat at the crossroads of fine art and commercial illustration, appearing in magazines and pochoir portfolios rather than gallery walls, which is part of why so much of it survives today as prints rather than singular museum paintings. As a fashion illustration in the Art Deco vein, this piece reflects the era's love of geometric stylization, jewel-toned palettes, and glamorous, larger-than-life femininity.
