Butterfly (Papillon) - George Barbier
About the Artwork
George Barbier worked in Paris during the 1910s and 1920s as one of the defining illustrators of the Art Deco movement, producing fashion plates, costume designs, and theatrical illustrations for magazines, couturiers, and the ballet and theater world. Papillon reflects that world directly: the butterfly costume points to the era's fascination with stage spectacle, exotic transformation, and the human figure reimagined through fantastical dress. Barbier's work sits at the intersection of fine art and applied design, drawing on the flattened forms and bold outlines of Art Deco graphics while retaining the elegance of couture illustration. Unlike many of his contemporaries working in oil, Barbier's images were made for print and reproduction, intended to circulate in journals and portfolios rather than hang in galleries. That history makes prints like this one especially suited to reproduction now, since the image was designed from the start to be seen at a distance, in multiples, and admired for its clarity of line and color.
