Water (L'Eau) - George Barbier
About the Artwork
George Barbier worked in Paris during the 1910s and 1920s, at the height of the Art Deco movement, producing fashion plates, costume designs, and decorative illustrations for magazines and luxury publishers. L'Eau belongs to a body of work in which the female nude stands in for an element or a season, a favorite device of the period's illustrators, who prized elegant line and flattened, patterned space over naturalistic depth. Barbier's training in academic drawing shows in the confident contour of the figure, while his instinct for fashion and ornament shows in the stylized treatment of water as pattern rather than as illusion. Illustrations like this one circulated in portfolios and periodicals rather than hanging in museums, part of the great flowering of French graphic design between the wars, and they remain some of the clearest visual statements of the Art Deco sensibility applied to the human form.
