About the Artwork
George Barbier worked primarily as an illustrator during the 1910s and 1920s, contributing to fashion journals and luxury publications where his elegant, stylized figures helped define the visual language of Art Deco. Au Lido belongs to this world of fashion plates and decorative illustration, a genre that prized flattened perspective, bold outline and restrained colour over painterly texture. Barbier's work captured the leisure culture of the period, resorts, beaches, theatres, as settings for the display of modern dress and modern attitudes. Unlike academic painters of the century before, Barbier was working in a commercial and editorial context, producing images meant to be printed and circulated rather than hung in a salon. His draftsmanship and sense of composition nonetheless earned him lasting recognition as one of the era's defining decorative artists, and his beach and fashion scenes remain touchstones for the Art Deco aesthetic.
