Wet Meadow

Vasilyev painted Wet Meadow in 1872, the last full year of his tragically short life; he died of tuberculosis in 1873 at the age of twenty-three. He had been forced by illness to leave St. Petersburg for the Crimea in 1871, and much of his late work was painted from memory and preparatory sketches made during his earlier travels across the Russian interior with Ivan Shishkin. This painting distills those remembered landscapes into something more concentrated and emotionally charged than direct observation alone could produce. The work was acquired by Pavel Tretyakov and became one of the foundational pieces of the Tretyakov Gallery's landscape holdings in Moscow, where it remains today. Critics of the Peredvizhniki movement recognized in it a capacity to render atmospheric instability, the precise suspended moment before a downpour, with a psychological resonance that set Vasilyev apart from the more documentarian impulse of his contemporaries. Ivan Kramskoi, writing shortly after Vasilyev's death, singled out his ability to make weather feel like inner life, and Wet Meadow is the clearest evidence for that claim.
