About the Artwork
Painted during Frieseke's most productive period in Giverny, The Garden Parasol exemplifies the artist's synthesis of French Impressionist technique with his distinctly American sensibility for domestic intimacy. Living just steps from Monet's famous garden, Frieseke developed his signature approach to plein air painting that emphasized decorative pattern and the effects of filtered sunlight on feminine subjects. This work demonstrates his mastery of what critics called the 'Giverny style': the integration of figure and landscape through shared color harmonies and the bold use of ornamental elements like the elaborate parasol. During this period, Frieseke was gaining international recognition, exhibiting regularly at the Paris Salon and beginning to influence a new generation of American artists who would carry Impressionist ideals back to the United States.
