About the Artwork
Painted during Frieseke's most productive years in Giverny, this work captures the artist at the height of his exploration of decorative Impressionism and feminine subjects in garden settings. Living just down the road from Monet, Frieseke developed his own interpretation of light and color that emphasized the interplay between figure and landscape through broken brushwork and high-keyed palette. The painting represents his departure from earlier, more traditional approaches toward a purely American vision of French Impressionist principles. Hollyhocks demonstrates Frieseke's mastery of outdoor figure painting, a genre that established him as one of the foremost American expatriate artists of the early twentieth century and earned him recognition in both Parisian salons and American exhibitions.
