Artwork Description

Targa Florio Fantasy – F. Gordon Crosby, c. 1930s

Framed Canvas Art

This sweeping and masterfully cinematic reproduction of F. Gordon Crosby’s Targa Florio Fantasy captures the mythic scale and vertiginous drama of Sicily’s legendary mountain race. The meticulous digital restoration revives the sun-bleached terraced cliffs, the winding, dusty ribbons of the Madonie mountain roads, and the vibrant, pinpoint racing reds of the machines as they navigate the treacherous terrain. This careful attention ensures the masterpiece comes to life on canvas with stunning authenticity, preserving Crosby’s legacy as an artist who didn't just illustrate racing, but elevated it to a realm of epic, landscape-defining adventure.

Read full artwork description

In Targa Florio Fantasy, Crosby explores the structural power and mechanical defiance of the early motorcar as it challenges the ancient, rugged geography of Italy. The painting emphasizes the imposing presence and technical grit of the cars, which appear as small but determined forces against the backdrop of towering precipices and distant, sun-hazed fortresses. Crosby’s approach focuses on mechanical honesty—highlighting the vibration and dust of the climb—while framing the car as a modern marvel conquering a primal landscape. The work transforms a sporting event into a profound study of engineering ambition, human focus, and the industrial-age romance of the untamed open road.

The composition is breathtakingly vertical and immersive, using a soaring perspective to emphasize the sheer altitude and architectural complexity of the race course. The contrast between the cool, shaded crags in the foreground and the luminous, sprawling valley below creates a sense of atmospheric depth and breathtaking suspension. Crosby utilizes bold, gestural strokes and a sophisticated, earth-toned palette to capture the "vividity" of the scene—from the tactile roughness of the stone to the shimmering heat of the Sicilian afternoon. This work is not merely a racing scene; it is a masterful study of engineering truth and the pioneering spirit, serving as a centerpiece for this collection.

This premium reproduction conveys a sense of heroic grandeur and technical brilliance, making it an exceptional statement piece for upscale libraries, automotive galleries, or sophisticated travel lounges. It is a perfect fit for The Golden Age of Speed: Heritage Motorsports & Engineering Studies, highlighting the evolution of speed through a lens of raw, historical realism.

Digital Restoration

Many older painting have lost their vibrancy with age as varnish yellows and dirt accumulates. Our artisans use the latest in digital technology to restore these masterpieces to their former glory.

Fredrix Canvas with HP Latex Inks

All of our reproductions are printed on archival quality Fredrix poly/cotton blend canvas for longevity and vibrancy. This canvas has a more traditional look and feel compared to the 100% polyester "canvas" used by some competitors .

HP Latex Inks are non toxic and environmentally friendly compared to harsh, solvent based inks while still providing excellent range throughout the color gamut.

Poplar Stretcher Frame

Our stretcher frame is kiln dried Poplar that has been sustainably harvested from sawmills in Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia and is Appalachian Hardwood Verified Sustainable by the AMHI.

This is the best stretcher frame available and is far superior to the MDF and imported pine used by many competitors.

Premium Resin Frames

We exclusively use premium resin frames imported from South Korea, the world leader in this frame type. See The Frame for more information.

Frames are cut by our craftsmen on industry standard 14" Pistorious Double Miter saws for perfect cuts every time.

Perfect Corners

Frames and stretcher frames are joined carefully and precisely by our trained staff. We use only the finest in programmable, Italian joiners for all of our frames.

Hand Stretched

Our canvases are stretched by hand for an authentic touch of Old World craftsmanship.

Hand Embellished

Our artisans add clear gesso embellishments over the entire canvas to bring an unrivaled level of authenticity to our reproductions. The embellishments add a depth and dimensionality that is breathtaking.

Assembled With Pride

The stretched and embellished canvas is carefully secured to the frame with furniture grade staples and plywood corner gussets are added to the frame for additional structural integrity.

Dust Cover and Wire Hardware

A kraft paper dust cover is added to the back of the artwork for a clean, professional finish and a stout wire and hanging hardware is installed for ease of hanging when you receive your Canvas Classics painting.
