Artwork Description

Touring By Car – F. Gordon Crosby, c. 1920s

Framed Canvas Art

This breathtaking and masterfully atmospheric reproduction of F. Gordon Crosby’s Touring By Car captures the expansive, sun-drenched romance of early 20th-century automotive adventure. The meticulous digital restoration revives the vibrant, lavender-hued twilight sky, the rich autumnal oranges of the rugged hillsides, and the deep, mechanical blues of the vintage open-top tourer. This careful attention ensures the masterpiece comes to life on canvas with stunning authenticity, preserving Crosby’s legacy as the preeminent chronicler of the "Golden Age" of motoring and its intersection with the wild, natural world.

Read full artwork description

In Touring By Car, Crosby explores the structural power and engineering elegance of the early motorcar as it conquers the untamed landscape. The painting emphasizes the imposing presence and sleek, utilitarian lines of the vehicle, which rests along a winding mountain pass. Crosby’s approach focuses on mechanical honesty—highlighting the open cockpit and robust chassis that allowed the early pioneers of speed to explore the furthest reaches of the countryside. The work transforms a quiet moment of roadside reflection into a profound study of freedom, endurance, and the industrial-age promise of limitless travel.

The composition is expansive and cinematic, using the winding road to pull the viewer’s eye deep into the rolling vistas and distant peaks. The contrast between the solid, engineered form of the car and the soft, expressive brushwork of the sun-streaked clouds creates a sense of atmospheric depth and peaceful suspension. Crosby utilizes bold, gestural strokes and a sophisticated, life-affirming palette to capture the "vividity" of the scene—from the cool mountain air to the fading warmth of the setting sun. This work is not merely an illustration; it is a masterful study of mechanical truth and the pioneering spirit, serving as a cornerstone for this collection.

This premium reproduction conveys a sense of heroic exploration and technical brilliance, making it an exceptional statement piece for upscale libraries, travel lounges, or sophisticated offices. It is a perfect fit for The Golden Age of Speed: Heritage Motorsports & Engineering Studies, highlighting the evolution of travel through a lens of raw, historical realism.

Digital Restoration

Many older painting have lost their vibrancy with age as varnish yellows and dirt accumulates. Our artisans use the latest in digital technology to restore these masterpieces to their former glory.

Fredrix Canvas with HP Latex Inks

All of our reproductions are printed on archival quality Fredrix poly/cotton blend canvas for longevity and vibrancy. This canvas has a more traditional look and feel compared to the 100% polyester "canvas" used by some competitors .

HP Latex Inks are non toxic and environmentally friendly compared to harsh, solvent based inks while still providing excellent range throughout the color gamut.

Poplar Stretcher Frame

Our stretcher frame is kiln dried Poplar that has been sustainably harvested from sawmills in Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia and is Appalachian Hardwood Verified Sustainable by the AMHI.

This is the best stretcher frame available and is far superior to the MDF and imported pine used by many competitors.

Premium Resin Frames

We exclusively use premium resin frames imported from South Korea, the world leader in this frame type. See The Frame for more information.

Frames are cut by our craftsmen on industry standard 14" Pistorious Double Miter saws for perfect cuts every time.

Perfect Corners

Frames and stretcher frames are joined carefully and precisely by our trained staff. We use only the finest in programmable, Italian joiners for all of our frames.

Hand Stretched

Our canvases are stretched by hand for an authentic touch of Old World craftsmanship.

Hand Embellished

Our artisans add clear gesso embellishments over the entire canvas to bring an unrivaled level of authenticity to our reproductions. The embellishments add a depth and dimensionality that is breathtaking.

Assembled With Pride

The stretched and embellished canvas is carefully secured to the frame with furniture grade staples and plywood corner gussets are added to the frame for additional structural integrity.

Dust Cover and Wire Hardware

A kraft paper dust cover is added to the back of the artwork for a clean, professional finish and a stout wire and hanging hardware is installed for ease of hanging when you receive your Canvas Classics painting.
