Douglas Volk (1856-1935) completed this portrait in 1899, working primarily from life studies and photographs taken during Lincoln's presidency, as well as from life masks and casts that had become standard references for post-war Lincoln imagery. Volk had an intimate biographical connection to the subject: his father, the sculptor Leonard Wells Volk, had taken Lincoln's life mask and hand casts in 1860, some of the most accurate three-dimensional records of Lincoln's physical appearance ever produced. Douglas Volk grew up with those casts in his father's studio, and that sustained familiarity with Lincoln's precise physiognomy gives this portrait an authority that purely photographic derivations lack. Painted during a period of intense national memorialization in the decades following Reconstruction, the work reflects the broader American historical realism movement's effort to reclaim Lincoln not as icon but as man, situating him in the tradition of serious psychological portraiture rather than civic hagiography. The painting entered the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, where it has long been regarded as one of the more compelling post-mortem Lincoln likenesses in American portraiture.
