About the Artwork
Marie Spartali was one of Rossetti's most frequent models and later became an accomplished artist herself, making this 1869 study particularly significant within the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's circle. Rossetti created this work during his most productive period as a portraitist, when he was developing his distinctive approach to capturing both physical beauty and psychological depth in his female subjects. Spartali posed for numerous Rossetti paintings throughout the 1860s, and this chalk study represents the artist's careful observation of her classical features that made her an ideal embodiment of Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic principles.
