About the Artwork
Painted during Morisot's most productive period following her marriage to Eugène Manet, Summer's Day exemplifies her focus on the leisurely pursuits of bourgeois Parisian women during the Third Republic. The Bois de Boulogne had become a fashionable destination for the middle class following Baron Haussmann's renovation of Paris, and Morisot frequently depicted such scenes of modern urban recreation. This painting was included in the fourth Impressionist exhibition of 1879, where critics praised her bold handling while questioning whether such apparent spontaneity was appropriate for a finished work. The composition reveals Morisot's sophisticated understanding of asymmetrical balance and cropping techniques influenced by Japanese prints, positioning the boat at an angle that creates dynamic movement across the picture plane.
