About the Artwork
Painted in 1886 during the height of Morisot's artistic maturity, this work reflects her continued fascination with scenes of bourgeois domestic life and the play of natural light within interior spaces. As one of the founding members of the Impressionist group and the only woman to exhibit with them from their first show in 1874, Morisot had by this time established herself as a formidable artist who brought a distinctive feminine perspective to the movement's exploration of modern life. The painting demonstrates her evolution from the more tightly rendered works of her early career to the increasingly bold and expressive technique that characterized her later period. Unlike her male contemporaries who often focused on public spaces and urban scenes, Morisot found profound artistic territory in the domestic sphere, elevating everyday moments through her sensitive observation of light and her increasingly confident handling of paint.
