The Annunciation

Murillo painted this subject multiple times across his career in Seville, and this version dates to approximately 1660, a period when he had consolidated his reputation as the leading painter of devotional subjects in southern Spain. Working within the Baroque tradition shaped by Zurbarán before him and in dialogue with the broader influence of Flemish and Italian precedents reaching Seville through the trade networks of the port city, Murillo moved steadily toward a softer, more luminous treatment of sacred narrative. Where Zurbarán imposed austerity and Ribera imposed shadow, Murillo sought warmth and accessibility, intending his religious images to meet ordinary viewers at the level of feeling rather than doctrine. The composition here draws on the iconographic conventions established in the Council of Trent's programme for Counter-Reformation devotional art: the lily, the dove, the descending light, and the open book are all prescribed attributes, yet Murillo suffuses them with an intimacy that makes the encounter feel personal rather than ecclesiastical. His Annunciation panels and canvases are held today in the Prado in Madrid, the Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, and numerous private and institutional collections across Europe and the Americas, testimony to the sustained demand for his work both in his lifetime and through the centuries of collecting that followed.
