Adoration of the Magi

Murillo painted this work during his mature Seville period, a decade after completing his celebrated cycle for the Franciscan convent of San Francisco el Grande. By the mid-1650s he had absorbed the lessons of Zurbarán's severe austerity and Velázquez's naturalism and pushed beyond both toward a warmer, more emotionally accessible Baroque idiom that would define Andalusian devotional painting for generations. The Adoration of the Magi belongs to a moment when Murillo was cementing his reputation as the preeminent religious painter of Seville, working for cathedral chapters, hospital brotherhoods, and aristocratic patrons who wanted sacred images that moved the faithful without intimidating them. The picture reflects the Counter-Reformation programme of the Seville Cathedral chapter: accessible piety, recognisable humanity in holy figures, and a colour language that communicates hierarchy and devotion simultaneously through costume and gesture rather than through inscriptions or emblems. Murillo's treatment of the Epiphany is notable among his religious works for the sheer density of its cast and the easy command with which he stages such a complex procession without sacrificing the intimacy of the central encounter between infant and king.
