Alonzo Chappel (1828-1887) was among the most prolific illustrators and history painters of mid-nineteenth-century America, best known for producing meticulous portraits of statesmen, Revolutionary War scenes, and Civil War subjects for publishers including Johnson, Fry and Company. The Last Hours of Abraham Lincoln was completed in 1868, three years after the assassination, at a moment when the nation was still processing the trauma of Lincoln's death and the transition into Reconstruction. Chappel drew on eyewitness accounts, published descriptions of the death chamber, and portrait references to achieve a documentary accuracy that set this work apart from more allegorical tributes of the period. The painting circulated widely as an engraved print, making it one of the most recognized visual records of the event throughout the late nineteenth century. It belongs to a broader tradition of American commemorative history painting that sought to fix national memory in permanent, authoritative form, a tradition reaching back to John Trumbull's Revolutionary scenes and forward through Chappel's own extraordinary output of over a thousand historical compositions.
