Dreams
About the Artwork
Corcos painted Dreams in 1896, at the height of his reputation as the foremost portraitist of fin-de-siècle Italian bourgeois society. Born in Livorno in 1859 and trained under Silvestro Lega before moving to Paris and absorbing the polished technique of the French Academic Realism practiced by artists such as William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Corcos returned to Florence and built a career on society commissions, yet Dreams stands apart from that portrait practice. Rather than presenting a named sitter for social endorsement, it offers an anonymous woman caught in a moment of unwitnessed introspection, the books and gloves acting as props that frame a psychological state rather than a social identity. The painting was exhibited to considerable notice and has since entered the permanent collection of the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, where it is regarded as one of the most searching Italian figurative works of the 1890s. It sits squarely in the Academic Realist tradition in its flawless surface and controlled composition, while its subject anticipates the turn-of-century interest in female interiority that would occupy writers and artists across Europe in the following decade.
