Wheat Field with Cypresses

Van Gogh painted this work in June 1889 while voluntarily confined at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a time that, paradoxically, produced some of the most structurally confident paintings of his career. Working from the view visible through and beyond his room's iron-barred window, he executed at least three versions of the cypress-and-wheat-field composition; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York holds this large-scale canvas, widely regarded as the most resolved of the group. Post-impressionism here reaches one of its expressive peaks: van Gogh's signature impasto technique, applied with short, directional strokes that follow the contour of each form, transforms the surface into a kind of topographic map of sensation. The cypresses, traditionally a symbol of mourning in southern European culture, appear here not as emblems of grief but as participants in a living, breathing landscape, a reframing that says much about the artist's determination to find vitality in his circumstances. The painting entered the Metropolitan's permanent collection in 1993 and has since become one of the most recognized works in their European paintings holdings.
