About the Artwork
Created during van Gogh's prolific Arles period in October 1888, this work emerged from his fascination with the public garden near the Yellow House, which he painted multiple times as part of his ambitious project to capture the changing seasons of Provence. Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo about his intention to create a series showing the garden's transformation, and The Poet's Garden represents his vision of nature as a source of literary and artistic inspiration; painted just months before his mental health crisis, this canvas captures van Gogh at the height of his technical powers, when his revolutionary approach to color theory and brushwork was reshaping the trajectory of modern art.
