About the Artwork
Painted during van Gogh's final months in Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890, this work reflects his continued fascination with depicting the lives of ordinary people, a theme that had preoccupied him since his early career. The painting demonstrates van Gogh's mature Post-Impressionist style, where he moved beyond mere observation to express the psychological and emotional essence of his subjects through color and brushwork. Created just weeks before his death, The Drinkers represents van Gogh's final exploration of human fellowship and the simple pleasures of working-class life, themes he had explored in earlier works like "The Potato Eaters" but here rendered with the sophisticated technique of his late period.
