About the Artwork
Painted during van Gogh's stay at the Saint-Rémy asylum, this self-portrait emerged from a period of intense creativity despite his mental struggles. The artist created this work as part of a series of self-examinations, using his own image to explore questions of identity and artistic purpose during his confinement. Van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo reveal his intention to present himself as a working artist rather than a patient; hence the inclusion of his palette and professional attire.
