Avenue of Poplars in Autumn
About the Artwork
Van Gogh painted this work in October 1884 during his years in Nuenen, in the Dutch province of North Brabant, where his father served as a Protestant minister. It was a period of intense self-education: he was studying perspective, drawing from plaster casts, and reading Delacroix and Charles Blanc on colour theory, all while immersing himself in the rural life around him. The Nuenen period produced the first body of work in which he moved from tentative study toward confident pictorial statement. Post-Impressionism as a critical category had not yet formed around him; at this moment he was consciously working within the tradition of the Barbizon School and the Dutch landscape painters he admired, particularly Anton Mauve and Jacob van Ruisdael. The avenue motif recurs in several Nuenen canvases, and scholars read it as Van Gogh's meditation on the vanishing-point as a spiritual as much as a geometric device, a corridor toward something unreachable. The painting entered museum collections in the Netherlands and has been exhibited alongside the Nuenen figure studies as evidence of how fully formed his spatial instincts were before he ever reached Paris. It now resides in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
