About the Artwork
Painted when Solomon was just twenty years old, this work demonstrates the young artist's early mastery of the Pre-Raphaelite principles he had absorbed through his association with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones. Created during the height of Victorian interest in biblical narrative painting, The Mother Of Moses reflects Solomon's Jewish heritage and his unique position as one of the few Jewish artists working within the predominantly Christian Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood circle. The painting exemplifies Solomon's ability to infuse traditional religious subjects with psychological depth and emotional authenticity, characteristics that would define his contribution to British Symbolist art before his career was tragically curtailed by scandal and mental illness.
