Adoration of the Magi in the Snow
About the Artwork
Pieter Bruegel the Younger produced this composition as one of many accomplished copies and variants after his father Pieter Bruegel the Elder, whose original Adoration of the Magi in the Snow of 1563, now in Winterthur, set the template. The elder Bruegel was among the first painters in northern Europe to set a biblical scene inside an observed, meteorologically specific snowfall, and his son reproduced and elaborated the invention across numerous autograph versions, adapting it to the tastes of Antwerp collectors at the turn of the seventeenth century. Working in the tradition of Flemish Renaissance panel painting, the younger Bruegel inherited his father's gift for integrating crowd choreography with landscape: no figure is generic, each small silhouette carries posture, purpose and social type. The painting belongs to a family of winter scenes, including the famous Hunters in the Snow line, in which the Bruegel workshop transformed the liturgical calendar into a vivid ethnography of Flemish rural life. Versions of this composition are held in major European collections, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
