Composition With Grid 7 Lozenge - Piet Mondrian, 1919
About the Artwork
Piet Mondrian arrived at this kind of grid painting after years of paring down his earlier landscapes and tree studies into flatter, more schematic forms. By the time he was working in this manner he had helped found De Stijl, the Dutch movement built around the idea that painting could be reduced to horizontal and vertical lines, primary colour, and black, white, and grey. The diamond or lozenge format, which he returned to repeatedly in these years, let him keep the grid strictly orthogonal while setting the canvas itself at a diagonal, creating tension between the painting's shape and its internal geometry. These works sit at the foundation of geometric abstraction, stripping the picture down to its bare structural elements: line, plane, and a small, disciplined set of colours.
