About the Artwork
Mondrian painted this lozenge-format grid in the years following his move away from figurative and Cubist-influenced work, as he pared his vocabulary down to horizontal and vertical lines and a small set of flat colours. It belongs to the circle of artists and thinkers around De Stijl, the Dutch movement that argued for a universal visual language built from straight lines, primary hues, and the neutrals of black, white, and grey. The diamond canvas format was one Mondrian returned to more than once in this period, a deliberate way of destabilising the usual horizontal-vertical reading of a rectangle by rotating the whole field forty-five degrees. These works mark a transitional moment in his development, poised between the looser plus-and-minus compositions of the mid-1910s and the strict, saturated grids he would become known for through the 1920s and beyond.
