About the Artwork
Piet Mondrian painted his Pier and Ocean series while living on the Dutch coast, working through a sustained study of a single motif: the jetty at Domburg pushing out into the sea. Rather than depict the scene, he distilled it into a rhythm of plus and minus marks, a private notation for the meeting of vertical pier and horizontal water. These works sit at the hinge of his career, made as he moved away from Cubist-influenced still life and landscape toward the strict horizontal and vertical language that would soon define his mature abstraction. The reduction of nature to a grid of short, disciplined strokes anticipated the geometric clarity he and his contemporaries would later formalize as an art movement built on primary structure and flat color. This canvas belongs to that pivotal stretch, when Mondrian was actively dismantling representation in favor of pure pictorial order.
