About the Artwork

Piet Mondrian arrived at this kind of grid-based abstraction after decades of paring down his subject matter, moving from landscape and tree studies toward an art of pure structure. By the early 1940s he had left continental Europe for London and then New York, carrying with him the vocabulary he had helped establish years earlier: black lines, white ground, and the three primary colours, deployed with almost architectural discipline. Compositions from this London period show him refining that language further, tightening the intervals between lines and experimenting with doubled or broken bands rather than the single continuous strokes of his earlier work. The picture belongs to the broader current of early twentieth century geometric abstraction, a movement that rejected representation entirely in favor of line, plane, and primary colour as subjects in their own right. Mondrian's late works, made under the pressure of wartime displacement, are often read as some of the most rigorous distillations of that idea.
