About the Artwork

Piet Mondrian turned to the diamond, or lozenge, format repeatedly in the 1920s, using it to push his grid paintings toward pure structure: a square canvas rotated forty-five degrees so that the horizontal and vertical lines of the composition read as diagonals against the outer frame. The device belongs to the vocabulary he developed within De Stijl, the Dutch movement he helped found alongside Theo van Doesburg, which called for art reduced to primary colors, black, white, and the right angle, in pursuit of a universal visual language. Working in Paris during this period, Mondrian was refining what he called Neoplasticism, stripping away any trace of landscape or object in favor of relationships between line, plane, and color alone. The lozenge paintings are among his most rigorous experiments, testing how much tension a fixed grid could hold once its container was set at an angle. They remain a touchstone for abstract art of the early twentieth century.
