About the Artwork
Painted in 1871 during Renoir's formative period, this work represents the artist's exploration of domestic intimacy and bourgeois comfort following the upheaval of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. At twenty-nine, Renoir was establishing his artistic voice while still working within traditional genres; this Still Life With Bouquet demonstrates his ability to infuse conventional subject matter with personal warmth and chromatic richness that distinguished his approach from his contemporaries.
