The painting documents an intimate family moment during a particularly productive phase in Renoir's career, when he was balancing commissioned portraits with these more personal domestic subjects. Gabrielle's presence in numerous Renoir works from this era makes her one of the most frequently depicted figures in late 19th-century French painting, though rarely with such maternal tenderness as displayed here.
