About the Artwork
Painted during the mid-1890s when Renoir was exploring his 'Aigre period' synthesis of Impressionist color with more classical drawing, this work represents the artist's deep affection for Gabrielle Renard, who joined the Renoir household as a young woman from Essoyes and became both caretaker to the children and frequent model. The painting documents an intimate family moment during a particularly productive phase in Renoir's career, when he was balancing commissioned portraits with these more personal domestic subjects. Gabrielle's presence in numerous Renoir works from this era makes her one of the most frequently depicted figures in late 19th-century French painting, though rarely with such maternal tenderness as displayed here.
