About the Artwork
The Adoration of the Magi held by the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) dates to 1624, when the abbot of St. Michael's Abbey in Antwerp ordered it for the high altar after a fire, for 1,500 guilders, marking 500 years since the abbey's founding. Rubens had already produced a celebrated earlier version of this subject in 1609, now in the Prado. The Antwerp canvas remains one of the defining objects in the KMSKA collection, a demonstration of how Flemish Baroque painting synthesized Italian Renaissance grandeur with Northern European material richness.
