Loggia in Ravello

Kroyer visited southern Italy in the late 1880s and early 1890s, at a moment when Skagen had become the gathering point for the Danish and Scandinavian plein-air circle he helped lead. The journey to Ravello, the hillside town above Amalfi on the Campanian coast, was both a personal respite and an artistic experiment. Ravello's ruined villas and Romanesque arcades had attracted northern European painters for decades; Kroyer's response was characteristically empirical, bypassing the picturesque sentimentality common among his contemporaries and concentrating instead on the optical facts of light in a specific place at a specific hour. The painting belongs to the tradition of the Impressionist landscape study, yet Kroyer's formation in the Copenhagen Academy and his contact with the Paris Salon circle gave his touch a structural economy that separates him from the looser spontaneity of French Impressionism. The work has the quality of a committed study rather than a finished exhibition canvas, and that directness is precisely its strength: the painter is reporting what he saw, not constructing a souvenir.
