Beach at Stenbjerg

Kroyer painted this canvas during his mature years at Skagen, the remote fishing village at Denmark's northern tip that became the gathering point of the Skagen Painters, a loose colony of Scandinavian artists who came north in search of the extraordinary coastal light. By the turn of the century Kroyer was the colony's most celebrated figure, internationally exhibited and deeply identified with the long northern summer evenings and the sea. Beach at Stenbjerg belongs to a body of work in which he moved away from the figure paintings that first made his reputation and toward a more concentrated study of the coast itself, the light on open water, the rhythm of incoming surf, and the quality of cloud-filtered Nordic daylight. The picture shares the plein-air directness and the broken, opaque touch of Impressionism, yet the cool silvery key of the light and the particular geography of the Skagen shore give it a distinctly Scandinavian inflection that separates it from the warmer palette of the French painters Kroyer had studied in Paris in the 1880s. Stenbjerg, on the west-facing coast south of Skagen, offered him surf conditions the sheltered eastern shore could not, and several of his west-coast canvases from this period record the same quality of restless, foam-building sea.
