About the Artwork
Created during Redon's most prolific period of lithographic work, this print belongs to his monumental twelve-part series interpreting the Book of Revelation, commissioned in 1899. At this moment in his career, Redon had achieved mastery over the lithographic medium, using it to explore themes of death, transformation, and spiritual revelation that preoccupied fin de siècle artists. The series represented a culmination of his 'black period,' during which he worked exclusively in monochrome to probe the depths of human consciousness and religious mysticism. Critics praised these apocalyptic visions for their psychological intensity and technical innovation; the series established Redon as one of the foremost interpreters of biblical subject matter within the Symbolist movement, influencing later Expressionist treatments of spiritual themes.
