Adoration of the Magi
About the Artwork
This panel formed the predella of the Pisa Altarpiece, a multi-panel commission Masaccio completed in 1426 for the Carmelite church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Pisa. It was one of the last major works he painted before his death in 1428 at roughly twenty-six years of age, making the Pisa Altarpiece a summation of his brief but transformative career. The altarpiece was later dismembered, its panels dispersed to collections across Europe; this predella panel entered the Gemaldegalerie in Berlin, where it is housed today. Masaccio's significance in art history rests on his role as the founding figure of Renaissance painting in Florence: working in dialogue with Brunelleschi's system of linear perspective and Donatello's sculptural naturalism, he replaced the gold-ground decorativeness of the Gothic tradition with figures that stand, breathe, and cast shadows in a coherent, rationally constructed space. The Adoration panel distills that ambition into a horizontal narrative register, demonstrating how weight, hierarchy, and human dignity could be marshaled even in a small devotional format.
