Wheatfield on a Summer Afternoon - Marc Chagall, 1942
About the Artwork
This work belongs to a period of acute personal and historical crisis for Chagall. Having fled occupied France in 1941 with the help of the Emergency Rescue Committee, he arrived in New York as a refugee, carrying with him the weight of displacement, wartime loss, and an urgent need to reassert the rhythms of the world he had left behind: the fields, the seasons, the figures moving through a landscape saturated with memory. The wheatfield is a recurring presence in his imagery, rooted in the countryside around Vitebsk in Belarus where he grew up, and it carries here both a literal pastoral charge and an elegiac one. The dual suns, a motif without precedent in naturalistic landscape painting, belong unmistakably to Jewish folk symbolism and Expressionist distortion, where the sky is not a meteorological fact but an emotional register. Art historians situate the painting within Chagall's mature Modernist period, in which Post-Impressionist colour intensity and Expressionist psychological pressure fuse with his signature naive dreamlike figuration into something that resists any single label. The lone boatman, adrift on the right margin, reads as an image of the exile: present in the landscape but not rooted in it.
