Annunciation
About the Artwork
Leonardo painted Annunciation around 1472 while still associated with the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence, where he had trained since approximately 1466. The work is considered one of the earliest paintings attributable to Leonardo himself, and it already announces the concerns that would define his career: the systematic observation of nature, the integration of figure and landscape into a continuous spatial whole, and the exploration of psychological nuance in the figures' exchange. Executed in the tradition of Italian Renaissance panel painting, it borrows the compositional formula established by earlier Florentine treatments of the Annunciation subject while pushing decisively beyond them in its atmospheric landscape and the unsentimental dignity it grants both figures. The panel has been housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence since 1867, and it remains one of the most studied early works in the entire Renaissance canon, prized for the evidence it provides of Leonardo's precocious synthesis of empirical observation and classical pictorial order.
