The White Cow - Julien Dupre
About the Artwork
Julien Dupré (1851 to 1910) was a French painter closely tied to the countryside traditions that grew out of the Barbizon school, though he worked in a firmer, more assertive style of Realism than the Barbizon generation before him. He built his reputation on scenes of rural labor and livestock, painting cows, sheep, and the men and women who tended them with an eye trained on ordinary agricultural life rather than history or myth. Dupré exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and earned recognition there for canvases that treated farm animals and peasant labor as worthy subjects in their own right, painted with the same seriousness once reserved for grander themes. The White Cow belongs to this body of work, an unpretentious study of a single animal set into its landscape, typical of the close observation and solid brushwork that made his rural scenes popular with Salon audiences and collectors alike.
